Bio

J. Craig Tompkins is an artist currently living in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he teaches in the New Media department at the Institute of American Indian Arts: College of Contemporary Native Arts. He received his MFA in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in 2009. He has worked and collaborated with various artists including: Wafaa Bilal, Shawn Lawson, Richard Pell, and Jim Finn. His collaborative work has spanned several subjects including: the Iraq War, bioengineered organisms, and locative media.

Craig's work mediates the boundaries between physical and digital construction, often placing the two in agreeable opposition. He works to question digital representation and the meanings it holds for the original. Craig’s work explores distinct environments through 3D digital modeling and physical modeling creating a constant source of both curiosity and apprehension. Currently his research and artistic interests have turned to producing visual work for fulldome theaters. Craig’s work has shown nationally and internationally from Coimbra, Portugal to Athens, Greece to New York City.
